Level 2 (Month 7-12)
Congratulations, you made it to level 2. Now that you’ve mastered the art of the line, curve, and sharp edges, it’s time to work on something a bit more difficult. Welcome to the level of SHADING.
Level 2 takes you through basic shading techniques introducing the use of blended and diluted shades of black, basic colors with simple transitions in values, and bold packing of black and color. Sounds like fun? Well it absolutely is. Until you start struggling at least. No worries, we’re here to help.
Where is the issue? Don’t worry we’ll figure it out, looking over all aspects of your equipment, technique, and art education. Our goal is to discover what’s missing to achieve basic level shading and color techniques.
Oh, by the way, we want to be very clear about what Level 2 mastery means. 80% of licensed & professional tattoo artists are tattooing at a mediocre Level 2 ability. That puts you in a class equal or above most artists working in shops today. Employability will depend on a portfolio that is valuable to a shop. If you can master Level 2, then you are good enough to work in most shops in this country. One more thing, versatility in developing skills for different styles of tattooing will be key. Try to build a portfolio that ranges in different tattoo styles in order to interest a wide range of clients. In your early years as a tattoo artist, your income will depend on it. Styles at Level 2 include American Traditional, Japanese Traditional, New School, Neo-Traditional, Trash Polka, Watercolor, and more!
And remember this, entry level and advanced art classes are always included in level 2.
Here we go guys and gals, let’s get out there and make it happen!
